S13E1, The Sword of Guillaume

The first episode of S13, The Sword of Guillaume, is certainly significant! Put aside the gruesome decapitations and "flesh squelching" (as my tv captions described), this one is significant in that it introduces the audience to the future DCI Barnaby, John, who is the cousin of our Tom. We don't get to know too much about John other than he is an understated detective who has a constant skeptical look underneath rolling eyes. Tom seems to like him enough, so we'll like him too. We get to visit the sunny and joyful town of Brighton, full of amusement and ocean waves. Jones gets the shaft and can't even sit down on a beautiful day for a lovely lunch with his co-shafted, Gail. Tom has another admirer in the form of the town tart in her flirtatious, low cut dress, tempting Tom with requests for cuddling and desert island fantasies. Joyce is on to the whole thing and tells Tom to watch himself. The character of Rev Giles Shawcross is well-played and given several interesting lines throughout, my favorite scene being the one in which he speaks hopelessly to God beneath the church's gorgeous stained glass. You may even have a good chance of figuring out who the killer is, which is always fun. The countdown begins with only 7 more episodes until Tom retires.
