S12E2, The Black Book, starts off rather humdrum, stays that way, begins to annoy, and then well, gladly picks up the pace with a few twists in its final quarter. Sadly, even the presence of Barnaby does not make up for the cringe factor of this one. He's gotten keen on one of the suspects, a fake, sneaky, heck--even criminal female, whose raspy manner of speaking made my eyes twitch irritatingly from the beginning to the end. Her name is Matilda, and she is presented as being a charming and fascinating beautiful woman, yet to this viewer she came across as deceitful and frumpy, in fact, very creepy--yet, we're meant to think that Tom finds her...shall we say..."interesting"? I suppose it could be the fact that she loved to bring his and Jones' attention to the life-sized paintings of completely nude women and breathlessly asked, "Doesn't she have a beautiful body?" regarding an entirely full frontally nude model, (um....yeah, why do you ask, weirdo)? Speaking of fake voices, there are 2 American accents in this one, although one was a double fake. Joyce's smile brightens up this dark chapter, but I'd judge this book by its cover, that is, just get under my covers and hope the next ep is better! Until then, enjoy the view:
